Basketball is a fast-paced team sport that combines speed, strategy, and skill. Two teams compete to score points by shooting the ball through the opponent’s hoop, all while defending their own.
Objective of the Game
Score more points than the opposing team by the end of the game.
Field goals: 2 points (or 3 points if shot from beyond the arc).
Free throws: 1 point each.
Basic Setup
Teams: 5 players on the court per team (2 guards, 2 forwards, 1 center).
Match: 4 quarters, each lasting 8 minutes (high school), 10 minutes (international), or 12 minutes (NBA). The game clock stops for fouls, timeouts, and out-of-bounds plays.
Court: 94 feet long by 50 feet wide (NBA standard; slightly smaller in high school).
Ball: Leather or composite, designed for grip and bounce.
Basic Rules
Dribbling: Players must bounce the ball while moving; no traveling (taking steps without dribbling). Shot clock: Teams have 24–35 seconds (depending on level) to attempt a shot.
Passing or shooting: Players can pass to teammates or attempt a shot at the basket.
Defense: Blocking, stealing, and contesting shots are allowed, but excessive contact is a foul.
Common Fouls
Personal foul: Illegal physical contact; results in free throws if in the bonus. Technical foul: Unsportsmanlike conduct; results in free throws and possession.
Flagrant foul: Excessive or dangerous contact; results in free throws and possible ejection.
Key Player Positions
Point Guard: Directs the offense, controls the ball, and sets up plays. Shooting Guard: Strong perimeter shooter and scorer.
Small Forward: Versatile player, often scoring inside and outside.
Power Forward: Plays near the basket, rebounds, and defends.
Center: Tallest player, anchors defense, rebounds, and scores in the paint.
Game Flow
Teams start with a tip-off at center court. Move the ball through dribbling and passing to create scoring opportunities. Take a shot before the shot clock expires. Transition quickly to defense when possession changes. Repeat through 4 quarters, with the team scoring the most points declared the winner.
USA Basketball - the national governing body for basketball in the United States and oversees the Olympic, World Cup, and international competition programs for men, women, 3x3, junior, and youth national teams. In addition to selecting and training teams for global events, USA Basketball develops the sport domestically through nationwide youth programming, coach licensing, referee development, and competitive pathways. The organization also hosts and sanctions national-level events, including youth tournaments and the U.S. Open Basketball Championships, providing structured competition for clubs and athletes across the country.
CIF Southern Section - The CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS) is the largest of the California Interscholastic Federation’s ten statewide sections and governs high school athletics for more than 550 member schools across Southern California. It oversees competitive sports programs for public and private high schools, establishes eligibility rules, manages competitive divisions, and administers postseason championships. CIF-SS supports student-athletes across a broad range of sports including basketball, football, water polo, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, and many others.
Beyond competition, the CIF Southern Section promotes academic standards, sportsmanship, equity, and athlete welfare, ensuring athletics function as an extension of the educational environment. Through structured leagues, playoff formats, and statewide alignment, CIF-SS provides opportunities for student-athletes to develop skills, represent their schools, and compete for league, divisional, and state championships.
